Dullingshire

Dullingshire

A Short Story: The Girl with the Purple Umbrella

There once was a girl named Lila who strolled through town with a purple umbrella—always open, even on the sunniest of days. She wore socks that didn’t match, spoke in rhymes when no one asked, and could often be found conversing with lamp posts or feeding imaginary pigeons.

People in the town of Dullingshire whispered.
“She’s strange,” said the baker.
“Weird,” nodded the barber.
“Completely off,” murmured the mayor.
“Possibly crazy,” concluded the postman.

One day, a curious boy named Felix asked her why she did the things she did. She twirled her umbrella, smiled, and said:
“I’m not strange, weird, off, nor crazy—
My reality is just different from yours, dear Daisy.”

“My name’s Felix,” he corrected.

“Exactly,” she winked.

She invited him to walk with her. Under her umbrella, the world looked different—full of colour, music, and upside-down rainbows. Trees whispered secrets, puddles shimmered like portals, and the clouds giggled above.

By the time they returned, Felix wasn’t sure whether he had visited another world or simply looked at his own for the first time. He tried explaining it to others, but they shook their heads and gave him cautious glances. He didn’t care.

From that day on, Felix carried a green balloon wherever he went and sometimes whistled at flowers to see if they’d sing back.

And when people whispered about him, Lila simply smiled and said,
“Welcome to my reality.”

And that’s how the world became a little less dull, and Dullingshire never quite lived up to its name again.

Two sheets to the wind

Some people might say that I am so cracked
‘Two sheets to the wind’ and therefore quite lacked
But I say it’s them who are lacking of sorts
Afraid to speak up, to convey their true thoughts

To speak and to mean just what we do say
Is an honesty lacking in the world of today
If more would join in with this wonderful cause
People would like and give it applause

But people are fickle, nice to the face
But when we are gone they fall down in disgrace
If more were to be seen as ‘two sheets to the wind’
Perhaps more would be happier and less would have sinned.
(It’s just a thought).

Cracked

Some people might think that I am so cracked,
Two sheets to the wind, and that is a fact.
But I say it is they who are lacking of sorts,
Afraid to speak up, to convey their true thoughts.

To speak and to mean just what we might say,
Is honesty so lacking in the world of today.
If people joined in with this wonderful cause,
They would value and welcome and give it applause.
*
But people are strange; so nice to the face,
Then turning their back they fall down in disgrace,
Lying and cheating with no thought of the pain,
That neglecting truth causes, and who is to blame.
*
They just follow the herd, they follow the crowd,
Ticking off those who stand alone from the crowd,
Laughing at those two sheets in the wind,
Oblivious to the fact that they are happier than them.
*
If more people were ‘two sheets to the wind’,
More would be happier and less would have sinned.

Don’t be Like Sheep

Don’t be like sheep that creep half asleep,

Each and every day of their lives,

Believing what is said, drummed into their heads,

By those in control, selling lies.

Instead, use your head, and question what is said,

By those who think they can guide,

You with dreams, consumer items and things,

To distract you from what is inside,

Inside of us all, potential so tall,

The power of the Universe, it’s true,

So look deep inside and search for the light,

Of Creation; waiting there especially for you.

I don’t care what you call me

as long as you enjoy reading my stories
